bus model making case: The craftsmanship process from blueprint to 90% replication

1. Preliminary preparation: Set the tone with drawings and materials

Before production, the team first collected historical photos and archival drawings of old buses, focusing on details such as the body contour, window distribution, and logo style. In terms of material selection, high-strength aluminum alloy was used for the frame (lightweight and resistant to deformation), paired with PVC board for the body shell (easy to shape and corrosion-resistant); transparent acrylic board was used for the windows to simulate the texture of real glass; metal wheels and rubber tires were selected to reproduce the retro bus wheel design and tire tread pattern.

II. Framework construction: The framework determines the form

Frame welding:

The scaled-down body frame is welded using aluminum alloy profiles to form the basic framework of a "rectangular body + curved roof". Strict control is maintained over dimensional errors during welding (with an error of ≤2mm for each section of the frame) to ensure smooth overall body lines.

Framework reinforcement:

Weld reinforcement ribs at key stress points of the skeleton (such as the door and roof edges) to ensure structural stability during the later stages of model painting and installation details.

III. Body Molding: From "Framework" to "Shell"

PVC board cutting and bonding:

Cut the PVC board into side panels, roof panels, and other components according to the body contour, and bond them to the aluminum alloy frame using specialized glue and hot-melt technology. During bonding, it is necessary to repeatedly compare the drawings to ensure that the body curvature and window positions are consistent with the prototype vehicle.

Window installation:

Cut holes in acrylic car windows in advance (matching the contours of the doors and windows) and affix them to the corresponding positions on the PVC body. During installation, ensure that the gap between the window and the body is uniform to avoid glue leakage during subsequent painting.

IV. Restoring details: making the model come alive

Details of doors and windows:

The doors are made of imitation wood-grain PVC board, simulating the texture of old-fashioned wooden bus doors; the window frames are outlined with thin metal strips, restoring the metal window frame design of the original vehicle.

Wheel and hub:

The wheel hub is crafted from stainless steel, featuring a retro design (such as multi-spoke design), while the tires are made of rubber, imprinted with the tread pattern of the original car tires, making the wheels appear more realistic when rotating.

V. Coloring and Marking: Resonance between Color and Memory

Base color spraying:

The main body of the car body is painted white, with multiple coats applied (each coat is applied after the previous one has dried completely) to ensure uniform color and no flow marks.

Stripes and logos:

The blue and white stripes on the car body are precisely outlined with blue paint, and the width and position of the stripes are exactly the same as those of the prototype car. The interior signs such as "Safety Alarm" and "Great Way" are first painted with white primer, and then hand-painted with red paint, with the font style and size strictly replicated from the historical prototype.

VI. Post-production Adjustment: The "Last Mile" of 90% Restoration

Detail repair:

Inspect details such as body gaps and window edges, use PVC glue to fill the gaps, and then sand them down with sandpaper to make the surface of the car body smooth and flawless.

Overall calibration:

Place the model in a simulated scene, compare it with historical photos, and make minor adjustments to the body proportions, logo positions, etc., to ensure a restoration degree of over 90%.
