Southern Airlines Passenger Aircraft Model Production Case Study (1:200 Scale Model)

1. Project Background and Requirements Confirmation
The client commissioned the production of a 30-centimetre-long Southern Airlines passenger aircraft model, requiring it to be based on the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, with a reproduction accuracy of over 90%. The model must accurately depict Southern Airlines' signature sky-blue paint scheme, red cotton flower logo, and fuselage details, intended for use as corporate gifts or display purposes.
2. Production Process
3D Modelling and Structural Optimisation
Based on photos of Southern Airlines' current passenger aircraft provided by the client, industrial-grade 3D modelling software was used for digital reconstruction. Key features such as winglets, engine intakes, and landing gear doors were meticulously recreated. The model was divided into major components including the fuselage, wings, and tail section to ensure assembly precision.
3D Printing and Material Selection
The main fuselage is produced using high-precision stereolithography 3D printing technology with aviation-grade grey resin material to ensure the 30cm-long fuselage remains free of bending or deformation. Complex curved surfaces such as engine nacelles and flaps are printed using flexible resin to enhance detail representation. All printed components undergo a 12-hour UV secondary curing process.
Surface Finishing Treatment
The fuselage surface is finely sanded, first using 400-grit sandpaper to remove print layer textures, then polished with 1200-grit waterproof sandpaper. Recessed areas such as windows and doors are manually refined using micro drill bits. Critical areas like the wing leading edge and engine intake are filled with photopolymer putty to eliminate micro-pores.
Painting Process
Primer treatment: The entire aircraft is sprayed with white water-soluble primer to ensure adhesion of subsequent colours.
Main colour spraying: The fuselage is painted in China Southern Airlines' signature sky blue (Pantone 2945C), with 0.1mm masking tape used to protect the colour separation edges.
Detail treatment: The cotton flower emblem on the tail is applied using high-definition screen printing technology, with the red sections undergoing three layers of colour application to ensure richness.
Text Identification: ‘China Southern Airlines’ and English logos are laser-engraved water decals with positional accuracy of ±0.2mm.
Detail Enhancement
Landing gear uses metal etching plates, and tires use soft rubber material to simulate real tactile feel.
Cockpit windscreen uses 2mm thick transparent acrylic panels with silver reflective film applied inside.
Wing leading edges are covered with metal foil to enhance reflective effects.
