Case study on the production of industrial equipment scale model (refrigeration unit)
1、 Project Overview
This case study presents a 1:10 scale model of a refrigeration unit (or similar industrial power equipment) used for industrial teaching demonstrations, technical exchanges, or product demonstrations. The model focuses on restoring the mechanical structure (such as compressor, condenser, pipeline interface, electrical control box) and appearance details of the equipment, and achieves a visual effect of a "reduced version of the physical object" through high-precision processing and painting.
2、 Production ideas and process planning
The model production revolves around "structural restoration+detail depiction+texture expression", and is divided into four stages: design modeling, structural processing, detail assembly, and painting decoration. It is necessary to first analyze the structural logic of the prototype device (such as shell layering, pipeline routing, and component nesting relationships), and then divide the modules proportionally to ensure that the form and functional relationships of each part are accurately presented.
3、 Production steps
1. Design and Modeling
Prototype analysis: Collect drawings or high-definition photos of physical equipment, decompose the core structure (such as compressor chamber, control box, pipeline group, flange interface, transparent protective cover), and clarify the geometric shape and spatial position relationship of each component.
Proportional conversion: Convert the physical dimensions to model dimensions at a ratio of 1:10 (e.g. compressor length 300mm → model 30mm, flange diameter 100mm → model 10mm) to ensure overall proportional coordination.
3D modeling: Use modeling software such as SolidWorks and Blender to build a 3D model, break down modules that can be independently processed and assembled later (such as control box casing, compressor body, pipe joints, transparent cover), and reserve assembly benchmarks for each module (such as slots, bosses, bonding surfaces).
2. Structural processing and forming
Flat component cutting: For flat structures such as shells, control box panels, brackets, etc., contour cutting is completed through CNC cutting or laser processing to ensure neat edges and accurate dimensions.
Complex surface/irregular part processing: For complex structures such as compressor chambers and curved pipe joints, 3D printing or manual shaping (such as using soil filling, kneading, and polishing) is used to ensure natural surface transitions and matching details with the prototype.
Transparent component production: Transparent protective covers, pipeline windows, and other components are cut or injection molded from transparent materials, leaving assembly gaps with the main body (to avoid thermal expansion, contraction, or adhesive deformation).
3. Detail assembly and connection
Module pre assembly: Pre assemble the control box, compressor body, pipeline group and other modules according to the design position, check the interface matching degree (such as the alignment of flanges and pipelines, the closure gap of the shell), adjust the deviation before formal bonding.
Fine component installation: Micro details such as flanges, bolts, and small connectors are fixed through bonding, embedded assembly, and other methods to ensure precise positioning (with the assistance of tweezers and positioning fixtures).
Pipeline and seal processing: The pipeline routing needs to restore the "routing logic" of the prototype (such as bend curvature and interface spacing), and the seals (such as O-rings and soft connections) are made of simulated materials (such as silicone) to reflect the visual characteristics of "flexible connections".
4. Painting and texture expression
Primer treatment: Spray primer on all components to fill minor defects (such as cutting marks, printed layer patterns) and enhance the adhesion of subsequent coatings.
Color separation spraying: Color separation is carried out according to the color logic of the prototype equipment (such as metal gray shell, black compressor, light gray pipeline, transparent cover), and cover tape is used to ensure clear color block boundaries.
Detail refinement: For small elements such as bolts, markings, and scale lines, a combination of "dot spraying+hand drawing" is used to refine them; Metal components can be coated with metallic paint or dry sweep process to simulate metallic luster; Transparent components can be treated with "semi transparent+gradient" to restore the transparency of glass/acrylic.
5. Final debugging and demonstration
Overall verification: Check the installation firmness and structural stability of all components (such as whether the pipeline is load-bearing and deformed, and whether the shell is tightly closed), and reinforce the supporting structure if necessary.
Display base matching: Design a simple display base (such as white acrylic board or wooden platform), fix the model through concealed bonding or magnetic attraction structure, and enhance the display effect.
4、 Difficulties and Solutions
Complex surface restoration: Combining 3D printing and manual polishing, printing rough blanks first and gradually trimming the surface to ensure consistency with the prototype curvature.
Micro detail assembly: Use a magnifying glass to assist in the operation, and create a "detail positioning template" in advance to ensure the positional accuracy of small parts such as bolts and markings.
Color and texture differentiation: Targeted processing of visual features of different materials (such as metal, plastic, glass) (such as the graininess of metal paint, the matte texture of plastic, and the translucency of glass) to enhance realism.
5、 Value of Achievements
This proportional model, through precise structural reconstruction and detailed depiction, can intuitively present the core structure and working principles of industrial equipment. It is suitable for teaching demonstrations (helping students understand equipment spatial layout), technical exchanges (showing product details to customers), exhibition displays (enhancing the visual communication power of industrial design), and other scenarios. It is an efficient carrier that connects "abstract drawings" and "physical cognition"
