The complete process of making a model airplane

This model is based on the prototype of China Southern Airlines' first Boeing 787-8 "Dreamliner" livery aircraft. It utilizes ABS engineering plastic and galvanized sheet as the core materials. Through four major steps: digital disassembly, manual fine-tuning, color separation painting, and precision assembly, it ultimately achieves approximately 90% visual fidelity, perfectly presenting the streamlined fuselage, winglet tips, and technological beauty of modern passenger aircraft.

1. Digital disassembly and cutting

Drawing analysis and module disassembly: Based on the three-dimensional views and CAD data of the actual China Southern Airlines B787-8 aircraft, the model is disassembled into six major modules: "fuselage + wings + tail + engine + landing gear + bracket". The fuselage is further subdivided into the front fuselage (including the cockpit), the mid-fuselage (including the passenger cabin doors and windows), and the rear fuselage (including the tail cone), ensuring that each component can be independently produced and assembled later.

Material cutting and forming: ABS plates are cut using laser cutting or CNC engraving, and the complex curved surfaces of the wings and tail are formed using heated vacuum thermoforming. Galvanized sheet components are formed using a bending machine, with screw holes reserved at key connection points to ensure assembly accuracy. The interior of the fuselage adopts a galvanized sheet bent-forming keel structure, running from the nose to the tail, serving as the main load-bearing axis of the entire model.

II. Formation of main structure and detail portrayal

Fuselage splicing and seamless processing: The front, middle, and rear fuselages are assembled using multiple ABS boards, bonded together with chloroform solution, and the seams are filled and polished with ABS powder to achieve a seamless effect. The cockpit glass is made of transparent acrylic board, which fits seamlessly with the fuselage, simulating the real cockpit view.

Wing and Tail Assembly: The interior of the wing is embedded with galvanized sheet spars to enhance its bending resistance. The winglet at the wing tip is formed by heating and bending ABS plates, with the surface polished to achieve a smooth finish. The vertical and horizontal tails are constructed using ABS plates carved and reinforced with galvanized stiffeners. Connection holes are reserved at the root of the tail for secure attachment to the fuselage, ensuring stable installation.

Engine nacelle production: The engine nacelle is formed by curving ABS plates, with galvanized plate support rings added to the inner wall to prevent deformation. The front air intake is simulated using etched sheets to resemble real fan blades, while the rear nozzle is carved out of ABS plates to create a converging-diverging structure, enhancing the realism of the details.

III. Surface treatment and color separation coating

Surface polishing and primer treatment: All ABS components are polished step by step using 400#-800# sandpaper to eliminate knife marks and seams. Then, atomic putty is used to fill minor defects. Finally, white primer is sprayed to lay the foundation for subsequent color separation painting.

Color separation painting and logo restoration: The masking and painting method is adopted. First, the main body of the fuselage is painted white, and then the blue masking film is used to mask the gradient area of the "Wings of Dream" painting. The transition effect of dark and light blue is achieved through multiple coats of paint. The kapok flower logo on the tail and the text logos on the fuselage are made using water transfer printing stickers to ensure clear fonts and precise patterns.

IV. Precision assembly and functional simulation

Internal frame assembly: The galvanized sheet metal joists inside the fuselage are fixed with screws to the galvanized sheet metal stiffeners of the wings and tail, forming a stable internal frame structure. The landing gear bulkhead is laser-cut from galvanized sheet metal and screwed to the internal frame of the fuselage to ensure the landing gear is securely installed.

External component assembly: The external components such as the fuselage, wings, tailwings, and engine nacelles are bonded using chloroform solution, with ABS reinforcement ribs added at key connection points. The landing gear adopts a combination structure of metal shafts and ABS wheels, with tires made of rubber material, with tread patterns engraved on the surface to simulate the retractable state.

Transparent component installation: The cockpit glass and passenger cabin windows are made of transparent acrylic sheets, which are fixed in place on the fuselage with transparent glue to ensure a seamless fit with the fuselage. Movable parts such as winglets on the wingtips and tailwings are connected with metal shafts, allowing for manual adjustment of angle to simulate real flight conditions.
