Project Overview
This case details the production of a 1:50 scale multipurpose engineering ship model, achieving a 90%+ accuracy in replication. The process emphasizes material selection, core craftsmanship, and finishing techniques to ensure a factory-quality result.
1. Material Selection
Hull Structure: Lightweight basswood is used for the keel and ribs, with 0.8mm ABS plastic sheets heat-bent to form the outer shell. The deck is constructed from layered pine wood planks to mimic real wood grain. The crane arm is made of brass tubing with stainless steel joints.
Functional Components: Winch systems use miniature gear assemblies paired with nylon ropes. The grab bucket is 3D-printed in resin and weathered for realism. The anchor chain is hand-woven from fine copper wire, with each link individually soldered.
Auxiliary Materials: Epoxy resin seals joints, water-based acrylic paints ensure eco-friendliness, and UV-curable glue secures transparent parts.
2. Core Craftsmanship
Hull Assembly: The keel and ribs are cut from plywood based on 1:50 blueprints, ensuring symmetrical alignment. The ABS shell is carefully heat-formed and reinforced with 0.3mm cork strips at seams to prevent warping.
Functional Details:
Winch System: Brass bases house precision gears with miniature bearings; nylon ropes are wax-treated for durability.
Grab Bucket: 3D-printed and painted matte gray, with edges sanded to show wear.
Anchor Chain: Copper wire links are soldered and aged using a copper sulfate solution.
Dynamic Features: Hidden magnets in the hull create a "floating" effect on a steel base, simulating operational conditions.
3. Finishing & Detailing
Surface Treatment: A water-based primer is applied and sanded smooth. The deck uses a "dry brush" technique with rust-red paint to highlight wood grain texture.
Painting:
Hull: Matte orange-red with a dark gray transition, matching typical engineering vessel colors.
Metal Parts: Brass components are acid-aged; gears are painted with an oil-stained effect.
Windows: UV-cured glue forms the cabin glass, with sealant traces painted at edges.
Display: A walnut base with engraved wave patterns houses LED lighting for a dynamic presentation. A matte varnish coat reduces glare.
