Cartoon Panda Model Production Case Study: Fiberglass Construction, Faithfully Reproducing the Adorable Appearance

I. Project Background

A children's theme exhibition hall planned to create an interactive display area and sought to customise a cartoon panda model as the central exhibit to attract children's attention and promote panda culture. The client explicitly required that the model's main body be a single panda figure with a 90% accuracy rate, while also demanding durable materials suitable for long-term indoor display.

II. Core Production Process

Precise Clay Sculpting: Professional sculptors began detailed clay sculpting work based on the client's provided cartoon panda design concept drawings. They meticulously carved every morphological feature of the panda, from its round body proportions to its perpetually sleepy, adorable eyes, and its slightly upturned mouth that seems to always carry a smile, undergoing repeated refinement and adjustment.

Efficient mould replication: After the clay sculpture was perfected, the team swiftly moved on to the mould replication phase. They selected high-quality silicone material, carefully encasing the clay sculpture within it to ensure every detail was precisely replicated. Once the silicone had fully cured, the mould was gently separated from the clay sculpture, yielding a complete and intricate mould. This mould serves as the foundation for subsequent production and is crucial for ensuring the model's high fidelity.

Precise fibreglass moulding: Next comes the fibreglass production process. The craftsmen first evenly apply the prepared resin to the inner wall of the mould, then lay a layer of fine fibreglass cloth and carefully press it to ensure it fully adheres to the mould surface. Once each layer of material has reached the ideal curing state, the next layer is applied. This process is repeated layer by layer, gradually constructing the preliminary form of the panda model. Throughout this process, craftsmen strictly control the thickness and uniformity of each layer to ensure the final product's strength and stability.

3. Material Selection and Compatibility

Main Material: High-quality fibreglass was chosen as the main material for the model. This material not only has excellent strength and durability, capable of withstanding daily wear and tear, but also has good plasticity, allowing it to perfectly capture the panda's rounded shape and delicate texture. Additionally, its surface has a smooth and lustrous texture, complementing the panda's soft appearance.

Supporting Materials: For detailed finishing, eco-friendly paints and pigments were used for colouring. These materials feature vibrant and long-lasting colours, accurately reproducing the panda's classic black-and-white fur pattern and the natural hues of its face and ears. Furthermore, to enhance the model's realism, soft rubber material was applied to the panda's paw pads to simulate the texture of real paw pads.

4. Post-Processing and Colouring

Fine Sanding and Polishing: After the fibreglass components were formed and fully cured, craftsmen used fine sandpaper to perform multiple rounds of meticulous sanding on the model's surface. Progressing from coarse to fine sandpaper, they gradually removed surface imperfections and unevenness, giving the model a smooth, porcelain-like texture. Subsequently, professional polishing equipment and agents were used to further enhance the surface gloss, making the panda appear even more lifelike.

Vivid Colouring Reproduction: The colouring process is a meticulous artistic creation. The craftsmen strictly followed the colour requirements of the design draft, first applying a base colour to the entire model to establish the basic colour tone. Then, using delicate brushes, they carefully depicted every detail of the panda, such as the highlights of the eyes and the texture of the fur. When handling the transition between black and white fur colours, they used a gradient technique to make the colour transitions natural and smooth, as if painted by nature itself.
